The show got off to a strange start. Two warm up acts came on and sang about 3 songs each before the Diva herself made an appearance.
The mainstage primarily consisted of a scafold two tier arrangement on which Beyoncé was backed by her all-female band.
A large scale theatric entrance with lots of dry ice smoke heralded the start of the show proper and a romp through a host of well known songs.
Now dont get me wrong, Beyoncé is no ordinary performer. The 27-year-old powerhouse could stand out by her voice alone like some opera singer above all the stage show. Infact at times she reminded me of Tina Turner (and she has the legs and presence to match) - she was confident and seemingly down to earth.
However for me there was something missing. Perhaps because I had seen Pinks show only a week before the task that Beyoncé had before here to impress me was that much greater.
Beyoncé used hi wires to get from Main to stage B... but it was far less ambitious than Pinks. More panto fairy than full on trapeeze. The stage its self was wooden and lacked the sense of design, colour and dynamisism of Pinks relying on one collapsing staircase and three large video screens as the backdrop, Equally Beyoncé remaind the sole focus on stage and it was a large stage to fill and being honest she is not the most dyanamic of performers.
All in all though I enjoyed it. It was a competent performance that delivered the goods. It wasnt so much rock and roll as much as listening to the CD. There were few rough edges and everything had been choreographed to perfection.
A great show.. but Pink was in the divison above!
